Quote and Person of the day- Bruce Lee

“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”⠀

- Bruce Lee⠀

Bruce Lee, born 1940, was a Hong Kong American martial artist, actor, director, & philosopher. Lee's father, a popular Chinese opera star, brought his wife & 3 children with him from Hong Kong to San Francisco while he toured the U.S. After the tour was over, the Lees decided to return home even though their native Hong Kong was occupied by Japanese troops.⠀

As a teenager, Lee became involved in 2 contrasting worlds: gang warfare & dance. As a dancer he won competition’s, & as a gang member he risked death on the streets. Out of fear that he might be caught at some point without his gang, Lee began to study kung fu. When he got into trouble with the police for fighting, his mother sent him to the U.S to live with family friends.⠀

Lee finished high school & enrolled as a philosophy major at the University of Washington, where he supported himself by giving dance lessons & waiting tables at a Chinese restaurant. Lee then moved to California where began to pursue his acting more seriously, & landed a part in the TV series ‘The Green Hornet’.⠀

Lee had the qualities of a star but it was just as clear that an Asian American faced limitations within the Hollywood system, which tended to cast Asian actors in stereotypical roles. Therefore in 1971, Lee and his family moved to Hong Kong.⠀

Back in Hong Kong, Lee soon signed a 2-film contract, & released Fists of Fury late in 1971. Fists of Fury set box-office records in Hong Kong which were broken only by his next picture, The Chinese Connection. Lee established his own film company, and began directing movies. Unfortunately, in 1973, 3 weeks before his 4th film, Enter the Dragon, was released in the U.S, he died suddenly. Lee's death became a source of controversy. Officially the cause of death was brain swelling as a reaction to aspirin he had taken for a back injury although there was speculation that he had been killed by hit men. Throughout his life, Lee had been obsessed by fears of his early death.⠀

Bruce Lee left a profound legacy in the film & martial arts world, cementing his place as role model to many.
